Safety Comparison

The Traverse offers an optional front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Sienna doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The Traverse (except LS) offers an optional collision warning system, which detects an impending crash through forward mounted sensors and flashes a bright light and sounds a loud, distinctive tone to warn the driver to brake or maneuver immediately to avoid a collision. The Sienna doesn't offer a collision warning system.

The Traverse (except LS)’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The Sienna doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

To help make backing safer, the Traverse LTZ’s cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Sienna doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Traverse and the Sienna have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and available all-wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Chevrolet Traverse is safer than the Toyota Sienna:

Warranty Comparison

Chevrolet’s powertrain warranty covers the Traverse 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Sienna. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Sienna ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Traverse’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Sienna’s (6 vs. 5 years).

There are almost 4 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Traverse’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

The Traverse has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Sienna doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the van’s engine.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Traverse has a standard 660-amp battery. The Sienna’s 582-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2013 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 5 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked 6th.

The Traverse LS/LT’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 15 more horsepower (281 vs. 266) and 21 lbs.-ft. more torque (266 vs. 245) than the Sienna’s 3.5 DOHC V6. The Traverse LTZ’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 22 more horsepower (288 vs. 266) and 25 lbs.-ft. more torque (270 vs. 245) than the Sienna’s 3.5 DOHC V6.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Traverse has larger standard tires than the Sienna (245/70R17 vs. 235/60R17). The Traverse LT’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Sienna (255/65R18 vs. 235/60R17).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Traverse offers optional 20-inch wheels. The Sienna’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The Chevrolet Traverse’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Toyota Sienna only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For superior ride and handling, the Chevrolet Traverse has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Toyota Sienna has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Traverse LT/LTZ has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Sienna doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Traverse LTZ’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Sienna doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Traverse has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. When the ignition turns off, the headlights turn off after a delay timed to allow you to securely get to your front door. The Sienna has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the XLE/Limited.

The Traverse’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Sienna’s power mirror controls are on the dash, hidden behind the steering wheel, where they are awkward to manipulate.

The Traverse LTZ’s standard air conditioned front seats cool the driver and front passenger and help take the sting out of hot leather in Summer. The Sienna doesn’t offer air conditioned front seats.

Bluetooth wireless connectivity is standard on the Traverse, connecting the driver and passenger’s cell phones to the vehicle systems. This allows them to use the vehicle’s stereo and hand controls to place calls safely and easily. Toyota doesn’t offer wireless connectivity on the Sienna L.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Traverse is less expensive to operate than the Sienna because typical repairs cost much less on the Traverse than the Sienna, including $634 less for a water pump, $143 less for a starter, $6 less for fuel injection, $456 less for a fuel pump, $725 less for a timing belt/chain and $85 less for a power steering pump.
